Fix your promotion plan

The corporate world is unfair.

You think it rewards and promotes the best.

I agree, but I have a question.

Best at what?

There's a sweet fantasy that is told to us by the older generation

- "Work hard, and you'll go up."

It doesn't work this way anymore.

And it's a hard pill to swallow.

Because when you work hard, your boss will keep you where you are.

By working harder than others, you're buying job security, not growth.

But job security is not as reliable as you think.

The layoffs are increasing, and we may see more coming.

Many people are frustrated, and rightfully so.

Because when the profits are down, and board members are upset, layoffs are the remedy.

And at that moment, you turn from a hero into a number on a spreadsheet.

Especially if you're not directly producing the product, but just managing and facilitating.

I've been there.

And it sucks.

Is that a fair game?

Doesn't look like it.

Is it true?

Absolutely.

The sooner in your career you realize it, the better off you are.

So make yourself the best at keeping your job and going up.

Don't be a "bench player."

If you are ambitious, make sure you're becoming the best at being promoted.

And what's the best time to start focusing on it?

It is now.

Because you'll need to develop skills and then use them to create your own rules of the game.

It may take time.

Some people are going up pretty quickly - every 6 to 12 months.

What makes the difference?

They are chosen to grow.

They are preferred; they are selected.

Make yourself the preferred choice for promotions.

- Network within your organization and build rapport with everyone

- Connect with the whole executive suite in your company

- Know key people on a personal level, find the values you share

- Employ multiple powerful executives as your mentors

- Make them invest in your growth and success

- Find problems to solve and get involved in key projects

- Negotiate your promotion, make a deal

It may take you 6 to 12 months.

So, there's no time to lose.
