Suppose you're estimating a project.
You want to submit a funding request, but you're concerned that the funding will be cut back before approval.
You've done your homework and determined that to do the job properly, the required budget should be $25,109.25
To make everybody's life easier, you've rounded it up to $25,000 and submitted.
Turns out it's a mistake.
The research shows that if you provide a specific number, you're less likely to get pushback and cuts to it.
A specific number shows that you've done the work to know exactly what it takes to do the proper job and establishes your authority on the matter.
When you are an authority, the approvers are more likely to defer to your recommendation without challenging it.
Specific numbers always speak louder and add power to your word, especially after you take the time to figure out the exact cost down.
