Turn your Influence into Cash

Your job is a good source of money, but not the only one.

More often, it's not about how much money you earn but how much you don't leave on the table.

Or it's about what you get extra or free of charge every time you cut a deal.

Believe it or not, you miss the opportunity to save almost every day simply because you don't know what to say.

True story...

Once, I traveled from the US to Egypt and didn't want to spend my cash on selecting seats.

A selected seat on each plane costs $20-$30, and I have 3 planes to change.

When I arrived at the airport, I came to the counter to check-in.

Instead of limiting the interaction to the polite "hello" and "here's my passport," I stroke a conversation with the airline representative.

I learned that she isn't from the US and that she is staying here for 2 months, enjoying her job, finding new friends, and learning English. I complimented her English teacher and showed my genuine interest in her story.

The conversation went very easily because I knew how to ask questions and how to nurture our rapport and connection.

In the end, it struck me, "Why don't I ask for the seats next to the window?"

So I said, "I don't want to cause you too much trouble. Do you mind letting me sit next to the window?"

She smiled, said, "Sure," discarded the tickets that she had already printed, and made me new tickets on all the planes of my trip near the window.

I thanked her from the bottom of my heart for her kindness.

Those tickets could have cost me close to $100.

But most importantly, it was about the comfort of my trip, which combined to over 16 hours in the air.

So it was even more valuable to me than the price.

If I missed the opportunity to connect and build rapport, my chances of getting window seats free of charge would be much slimmer.
