Your skills define who you are

Do you know why C-level executives are so much more effective with people than you?

Hint: "Because they have power" is the wrong answer.

Actually, it's the opposite.

It's because they don't use their power.

Instead, they build relationships and then create a vision of the future where you can see yourself better off.

They don't push you to this future.

They show you the path, and you go there yourself.

Most likely, top executives in your company invest 10-20 times more in their negotiation skills than an average employee.

As a result, their approach to persuasion is quite different from the "Conventional approach" that others take.

Conventional approach: To ask, "How are you?" and then get straight to the point.

Negotiator's approach: Start by building rapport to help the other side open up.

Conventional approach: Lay out all the facts and data on the table.

Negotiator's approach: Discover new facts, opinions, and values of the other side.

Conventional approach: Share the logic and reasons why things should be a certain way.

Negotiator's approach: Ask questions and learn about the problems and pains of the opponent.

Conventional approach: Listen to notice a flaw in the logic and prepare the counterargument.

Negotiator's approach: Listen to notice specific emotions and prepare to reflect.

Conventional approach: Believing that if they just understand your logic, they would agree.

Negotiator's approach: Believing that agreement is emotional and based on perception of the future.

Conventional approach: Eliminating the options to narrow down choices.

Negotiator's approach: Create an opportunity and make you feel you don't want to miss it.

Using power is not the smartest option because it creates defensiveness.

Negotiation is a skill that defines your effectiveness as a leader.
